How much does SEO cost in the UK?

Almost every agency answers this with “it depends” and then asks for your phone number. It does depend — but the things it depends on can be explained, and so can our own price. Here is both.

The short answer

The hours of skilled work a campaign needs set the price of UK SEO, so the figure tracks how competitive your market is, how much is broken, and how fast you want to move. As a result, small local campaigns sit at the lower end, while competitive national or ecommerce work sits at the upper end. Because of that, Digital Movement UK publishes its entry price: Starter SEO from £495 a month, rolling monthly, with no lock-in.

01 — What you are buying

There is no price list, because you are buying hours

SEO has no unit. Nobody sells a ranking, because nobody owns one. Instead, what an agency actually sells is skilled time — a technical specialist finding what is blocking your pages, a writer producing something worth ranking, someone earning a mention from a publication that will not take money for it, and a senior person deciding which of those to do first.

So the pricing question is simpler than it first looks. A monthly fee is a number of hours. Ask any quote how many, and at what blended rate, and you will learn more from that one question than from any proposal deck.

This also explains why the cheap end of the market is so bad. A very low monthly fee cannot buy meaningful hours of a specialist’s time in the UK, so it buys a template report, an automated audit and a handful of directory submissions. In other words, that is not SEO done badly; it is not SEO at all.

Two practical notes before the numbers. Check whether a quote includes VAT, because agencies quote both ways. And check what is included beyond the fee — content production, tools, translation, photography and paid placements are sometimes extra.

02 — Up and down

What pushes the price up, and what pulls it down

An agency can quote two businesses in the same town three times apart, yet both quotes can be fair. Here is why.

Pushes it up

A competitive market

If the first page is held by national brands with tens of thousands of referring domains, you need far more content and authority work to compete. Law, insurance, finance, healthcare and anything national are expensive for this reason alone.

Pushes it up

A site with a lot wrong with it

Old platforms, slow templates, broken redirects from a migration, thin pages, duplicated titles, pages nothing links to. Before anything else works, you have to clear that technical debt, and clearing it takes weeks of real work.

Pushes it up

Scale and speed

Multiple locations, several languages, a large product catalogue, or a deadline set by a funding round. Wanting results faster does not compress the timeline much, but it does raise the monthly cost of trying.

Pulls it down

A tight geography

One town, one service, few serious competitors. Local campaigns need far fewer hours, which is why a good local programme can be genuinely affordable while a national one cannot.

Pulls it down

A healthy site to start from

A modern platform, clean structure, decent existing content and an in-house person who can implement changes. As a result, every one of those removes hours from the first quarter and moves the budget to work that grows.

Pulls it down

Sharing the work

If your team can write drafts, take photographs, gather reviews or make changes in the CMS, the agency does less and charges less. This is a real lever and most agencies will happily price for it.

03 — Budget levels

What each budget realistically buys

These bands are our own rule of thumb from scoping UK campaigns, not a market survey. Use them to sanity-check a quote, not to set your budget.

Monthly budgetWhat it realistically buysSuits
Under £500A few hours a month. Enough to keep a Google Business Profile healthy, fix small technical faults and publish occasionally. Not enough to compete for anything contested.A single-location business in a quiet market, or maintenance after the heavy lifting is done.
£500 – £1,500Keyword and competitor research, core technical fixes, a small number of properly written pages each month, local listings and a monthly report. Progress on local and long-tail commercial terms. Most local service businesses, clinics and single-site trades.
£1,500 – £3,500Everything above, plus consistent content production, link building and digital PR, Google Business Profile management, AI search work and conversion improvements.Multi-location firms, competitive local markets, growing ecommerce and B2B.
£3,500 and aboveA team rather than a person. Deep technical work, substantial content programmes, sustained digital PR, and the patience to compete on national head terms.National brands, large catalogues, regulated sectors and anyone chasing terms held by household names.

Why SEO cost bands overlap

The bands overlap because the work overlaps. For instance, a £1,200 campaign in a quiet county town can outperform a £3,000 campaign in central London, because the budget is not competing against the same wall of authority. So what matters is not the absolute figure but whether it is proportionate to what you are trying to beat.

Even so, it is worth seeing what the top of that scale looks like once it has run for years. Our breakdown of a UK health brand earning millions of organic visits a month makes the scale concrete — and separates the parts of the model that only work at that size from the parts a small business can genuinely copy.

04 — Our price

What we charge, and why it is on the website

Starter SEO with us begins at £495 a month. It is a rolling monthly agreement with no lock-in, no minimum term and no exit fee. It also covers keyword and competitor research, core technical fixes, a few properly written articles each month, local listings set up, and a monthly report written in words you would use yourself.

Above that, we scope Growth SEO and Market Leader SEO on the first call, because pricing them from a form would be guessing. Growth adds more content, link building and digital PR, Google Business Profile management, AI search work and conversion improvements. Meanwhile, Market Leader is for businesses competing nationally.

Why we publish our SEO cost

We publish the entry price for a simple reason. A buyer comparing agencies deserves to know whether we are in their range before spending an hour on a call, and an agency unwilling to say what its cheapest engagement costs is usually protecting a number it expects you to dislike.

The no lock-in part is the same argument in a different form. If the work is worth the money you will keep paying, and if it is not you should be able to leave. Still, ninety-two per cent of our clients stay, and we would rather earn that every month than hold anyone to a contract. You can see the full scope of what a monthly programme covers if you want the detail before speaking to anyone.

05 — Warning signs

What to be suspicious of in a quote

  • A guaranteed number one ranking. No agency controls Google’s results, and anyone promising a position is either deceiving you or planning to rank you for something nobody searches.
  • A guaranteed citation in ChatGPT or AI Overviews. Those systems are not deterministic, so there is no submission route. Effort can improve the probability, but nobody can promise placement.
  • A price quoted before anyone looked at your site or your market. It means a package decided the scope, not your situation.
  • Deliverables counted in units — twenty links a month, ten articles a month. Links that can be ordered by the dozen are the kind search engines discount, and article counts say nothing about whether the pages deserve to rank.
  • A twelve-month minimum with a meaningful exit fee. Long terms exist to protect the agency’s revenue, not your result.
  • Reports that lead with impressions, keyword counts and “work completed”, and never reach enquiries or revenue.
  • The agency owning your accounts. Your website, domain, Google Analytics, Search Console and Business Profile should be in your name, with the agency granted access. Anything else is a hostage arrangement.
  • A secret method. Every real technique in this industry is publicly documented. Secrecy usually conceals either nothing or something you would not sign off on.
06 — Judging value

How to tell whether you are getting your money’s worth

Value in SEO is slow to prove, which is exactly why it needs checking early and on the right things.

1 · Before you sign

Ask for the first ninety days in writing

Itemised: what the agency will audit, what it will fix, what it will build, who does each piece and roughly how long it takes. A proposal that cannot describe its own first quarter has not thought about yours.

2 · Months 1–3

Judge the work, not the results

Results are not fair to judge yet, but effort is. Ask to see the actual page changes, the technical fixes deployed, the pages published and where any links were placed. If the only evidence is a dashboard, ask again.

3 · Months 3–6

Watch the early indicators

Indexation improving, impressions rising on the terms you care about, target pages entering the top twenty, local grid positions moving. None of these pay the bills yet, but all of them precede the ones that do.

4 · Months 6–12

Move to cost per enquiry

Divide the fee by the qualified enquiries organic search produced, then compare it with what those enquiries cost you elsewhere. Our guide to comparing SEO and paid ads on cost per enquiry sets out the method, and a well-run ads account gives you a fair benchmark to measure against.

5 · Throughout

Ask what you keep if you leave

The content, the technical fixes and the links stay with your site. The accounts should stay in your name. If an agency’s answer to “what happens if we stop” includes taking anything away, you were renting, not building.
