SEO agency for Birmingham and the West Midlands
Birmingham, Solihull, the Black Country and Coventry sit in one continuous conurbation and behave as four separate markets. A large share of the region never searches the word “Birmingham” at all. We build for the places your customers actually name. From £495 a month, no lock-in.
One conurbation, four separate markets
Birmingham is the largest local authority in the country by population. Also, the built-up area around it does not stop at the city boundary. The West Midlands conurbation runs on unbroken through Solihull, Sandwell, Dudley, Walsall and Wolverhampton, with Coventry a short distance east. On a map it looks like one place. However, in how people search, it is nothing of the sort.
The clearest case is the Black Country. Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton hold a deliberate identity of their own. People there frequently do not describe themselves as being in Birmingham, or search that way. Indeed, “Black Country” is a term people genuinely type. As a result, a business chasing customers in Tipton, West Bromwich or Halesowen while targeting only the Birmingham term will lose most of that demand. Firms who named the place properly pick it up instead.
Sutton Coldfield, Solihull and Coventry are not Birmingham
The same pattern repeats inside the city. Sutton Coldfield only became part of Birmingham in 1974. Even so, it still behaves like a separate town, with its own centre, its own catchment and its own map results. Similarly, Solihull is a separate borough entirely, and its residents rarely call themselves Birmingham. Likewise, Digbeth, Edgbaston, Selly Oak, Kings Heath, Erdington and Moseley each carry demand under their own names. Coventry, twenty miles east, is a different city with a different economy, so it should never be swept into a Birmingham plan.
So the first job is to work out which of these places you genuinely trade in, and then to name them. Where a business has real coverage in a town, that town earns a page written about it. Where it does not, the page should not exist. Publishing one near-identical page per district with the name swapped is precisely the pattern Google's spam policy singles out. Overall, it risks an entire site just to chase places you could not serve anyway.
- Customers in Wolverhampton, Walsall and Dudley who never use the word Birmingham.
- Sutton Coldfield buyers who search their own town and see a different set of businesses entirely.
- Solihull, the NEC and the airport, which sit in a separate borough with separate results.
- Coventry, twenty miles east, treated as an outer suburb when it is a city in its own right.
- Trade coverage claimed across the whole conurbation when the vans only cross two boroughs.
- Manufacturers competing for local terms when their buyers are sourcing nationally.
Manufacturing search looks nothing like local search
The region's industrial past is not past. Engineering, automotive supply, metal finishing, tooling, castings and precision machining still run through the West Midlands. The Jewellery Quarter in Hockley, for instance, remains a working cluster of jewellers, casters, engravers and setters rather than a heritage attraction. These businesses sell in a way that has almost nothing in common with a local trade.
A buyer sourcing a machined component does not look for an engineer in Birmingham. Instead, they search a process, a material, a tolerance, a certification or an industry, from anywhere in the country or outside it. Volumes are small — sometimes a handful of searches a month — yet the contracts behind them can run to six figures. So for these firms the map result is close to irrelevant. The work is national: capability pages written precisely enough for an engineer to trust, and specifications a buyer can check. It also means named accreditations, plus content that answers the technical question better than a competitor's brochure page.
The professional core is different again. Colmore Business District holds a serious concentration of accountancy, law and banking, and HSBC UK's ring-fenced bank is headquartered in the city. Indeed, buyers in that market research at length, check credentials, and often arrive already holding your name. Meanwhile, the exhibition economy around the NEC and the ICC creates a third pattern. Demand spikes sharply for a few weeks around an event, then disappears just as fast. Each of the three needs a different plan, which is why our SEO services get sequenced rather than applied as a package.
Map, fix, build, report
The same four stages every time, shaped around which parts of the conurbation you can genuinely win.
The places you actually trade in
We separate the towns you genuinely serve from the ones sitting on a coverage list because they sounded useful. That normally means naming places properly — Walsall rather than “West Midlands”, Sutton Coldfield rather than “north Birmingham”. It also means cutting the areas where you could not realistically win or deliver.
Clear the blockers first
Technical problems come first because they are the cheapest wins available. They include pages Google cannot index, slow templates failing on mobile, duplicate titles and descriptions, broken redirects, and business details that disagree between the website, the Google Business Profile and the directories. In a region with this many similarly named companies, inconsistent details are a common and very quiet cause of weak local results.
The pages that earn enquiries
For local demand that means one honest page per town you serve, plus a complete verified profile for each real location. For technical and national demand, however, it means capability pages an engineer would trust — processes, materials, tolerances, accreditations. It also means content that answers the question a buyer would otherwise have to ask on the phone.
Enquiries, by place and by search
Every month we show which towns produced enquiries, which searches brought them, what is still stuck and what happens next. Written in plain words and tied back to the page that created each enquiry, so the following month's budget is decided on evidence rather than instinct.
What we are, what it costs
Digital Movement Marketing Ltd is registered at 128 City Road, London EC1V 2NX. We have no office in Birmingham and no staff in the West Midlands, so we will not suggest otherwise on a page built to attract enquiries from the region. Instead, we work with businesses there remotely from London: calls, shared documents, and a monthly report you can read without a glossary.
That leaves us to prove we understand the market, which is why the free review is research rather than a pitch. First, we look at who ranks now in the towns you care about and what those businesses are doing that you are not. Then we check where the technical problems sit, and which searches produce enquiries in your sector rather than browsers. Either way, you keep the findings whether or not you go ahead.
Starter SEO begins at £495 a month on a rolling monthly agreement with no lock-in. The figure rises with how many towns you serve, how much of the site needs rebuilding, and how contested your sector is. Birmingham head terms in professional services are genuinely competitive; however, Walsall, Dudley and Sutton Coldfield terms are often winnable much sooner. If the honest answer is that paid ads will bring customers faster while the organic work builds, we will say so. And if the real gap is visibility in AI answers rather than in Google, AI search visibility is where we would start instead. Digital Movement UK has worked with more than 300 clients since 2018 and still keeps 92% of them, which only happens when the work keeps producing.
Cities we also work with
We work with businesses across the UK. If the West Midlands is not your market, try SEO in London, Greater Manchester, Leeds and West Yorkshire or Bristol and the South West.
Fair questions, straight answers
The questions West Midlands owners and marketing teams ask before a first call.
Do you have an office in Birmingham?
No. Digital Movement Marketing Ltd is registered at 128 City Road, London EC1V 2NX. We work with West Midlands businesses remotely from London instead. There is no Birmingham branch and no staff in the region, and we would rather state that than let a page imply otherwise. The work is research, building, writing and measurement, and none of it requires anyone in the room.
Is the Black Country part of Birmingham for search purposes?
No, and treating it that way loses business. Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton have a strong identity of their own. In fact, people there frequently do not describe themselves as being in Birmingham or search that way. “Black Country” is itself a term people type. So if you want customers in Tipton, West Bromwich or Halesowen, the page has to name those places and mean it.
Should a West Midlands manufacturer bother with local SEO?
Usually not as a priority. A buyer sourcing a machined component searches for a process, a material, a tolerance or a certification, from anywhere in the country or outside it. So the map result barely features. Instead, the money goes into capability pages precise enough for an engineer to trust, named accreditations, and content that answers the technical question better than a competitor's brochure page.
More questions about SEO in Birmingham
Is Sutton Coldfield part of Birmingham?
Administratively yes — it became part of Birmingham in 1974 — but it still behaves like a separate town in search. It has its own centre, its own catchment and its own map results, since residents search their own town name. Likewise, Solihull is a separate borough altogether. If you trade in either, they deserve to be named rather than folded into a Birmingham page.
How long does SEO take to work in the West Midlands?
Technical fixes and profile corrections usually show movement within weeks. Terms for Walsall, Dudley, Wolverhampton and Sutton Coldfield are often winnable within a few months, because fewer businesses compete properly for them. Birmingham head terms in professional services are genuinely contested and take considerably longer. So we take the winnable ground first and approach the hard terms from strength.
What does SEO cost for a Birmingham business?
Starter SEO begins at £495 a month on a rolling monthly agreement with no lock-in. It rises with how many towns you genuinely serve, how much of the site needs rebuilding, and how contested your sector is. So a single-site trade covering two boroughs costs less than a professional firm competing across the conurbation. The free review gives you the likely budget before you commit.
